Most Catholics know they should go to confession during Lent.
But a lot of people either avoid it, misunderstand it, or make it harder than it needs to be.
Some put it off until the last minute. Some are afraid. Some do not know what to say. And some have not gone in so long that they feel embarrassed even walking in.
If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.
Here are some of the biggest things people get wrong about confession.
1. Waiting Until the Last Minute
A lot of people say they will go before Easter, but they keep putting it off.
Then life gets busy, the weeks pass, and Lent is almost over.
Confession is not supposed to be a last-minute cleanup. Lent is meant to be a time of real repentance and real change. The sooner you go, the sooner you stop carrying what you do not need to carry.
2. Thinking You Need the Perfect Words
Some people stay away because they are worried they will not say everything right.
That is not the point.
You do not need a perfect speech. You do not need to sound holy. You do not need to explain your whole life story.
You just need to be honest.
A simple confession made sincerely is better than polished words with no real repentance behind them.
3. Thinking You Have to Give Every Detail
This keeps a lot of people away.
You do not need to describe every detail of every sin. You confess the sin clearly and honestly. That is enough.
For example, you can say:
“I missed Mass on Sunday.”
“I lied.”
“I used God’s name in vain.”
“I viewed inappropriate content.”
You do not need to turn confession into a long explanation.
4. Forgetting That Jesus Gave This Authority
Confession is not just a Catholic custom that was invented later.
After the Resurrection, Jesus gave His apostles the authority to forgive sins. In John 20:23 He said, “Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.”
That means confession is rooted in Christ Himself.
When a priest hears confession, it is not just a man listening to your sins. Christ is working through the authority He gave His Church from the beginning.
5. Letting Fear and Embarrassment Win
A lot of people avoid confession because they feel ashamed.
That is exactly why they should go.
Confession is not where God humiliates you. It is where He forgives you.
The priest has heard everything. You are not going to shock him. And he is absolutely bound by the seal of confession. He cannot reveal what he hears.
If going face-to-face makes you uncomfortable, go behind the screen. If that still makes you uneasy, go to another parish. The point is to go.
6. Treating It Like a Reset Button With No Intention to Change
Confession is not magic words with no effort afterward.
It requires sorrow for sin and a real intention to change.
That does not mean you have to be perfect before you go. It means you should be honest with God and willing to fight against the sins that keep pulling you down.
7. Missing What Confession Really Is
Confession is not about shame. It is not about a priest being nosy. It is not about checking a religious box.
It is about mercy.
It is about bringing sin into the light, hearing forgiveness spoken out loud, and walking away freer than when you came in.
That is why confession matters.
